Studio Notes | What We’ve Been Up To
We’re excited to announce that Deirdre (Dee) Power has joined the Context Studio team as our newest Service Design Lead!
Dee is a multi-disciplinary designer with a deep passion for enhancing public services. She is driven to create systems that positively impact society and improve how people interact with essential services.
Dee has spent over three years working at IBM in the areas of cloud and automation, specialising in UX, design thinking, and facilitation. A highlight of this experience was coaching teams of new hires to learn design thinking skills by working on real-life business problems, from concept to MVP creation. Previous to this, she completed a discovery research at a start-up on tools for architects which was funded by the European Space Agency.
In 2021, she completed a Higher Certificate in User Experience (Level 8) from Dublin City University (DCU), where she graduated at the top of her class.
Before transitioning to digital design, she worked in construction offices in Cork and Vancouver, BC. Her role in improving the day-to-day operations of the local elevator branch, building and improving systems between the branch and union mechanics inspired her to move towards Service design. Her impact meant she rose from temporary co-ordinator to assistant supervisor for the department in nine months.
Dee holds a Masters’ and Bachelors’ degree in Architecture from the Cork Centre for Architectural Education (UCC/MTU). This Masters programme allowed Dee to understand ethnographic research in the political, social and built context of the city of Athens. Her thesis (The Movement of Squares : Spaces of Dissent, was highly commended by the IDI (Irish Institute of Designers in Ireland) in the 2016 Graduate Awards.
Passionate about affordable and sustainable housing, Dee was a Board member and Secretary of Carbery Housing Association, based in West Cork, from 2020 to 2022.
Outside of work, Dee enjoys travel, yoga, zazen meditation and pizza with barbecue sauce.
